Mobile phones have revolutionized communication worldwide. Though primarily meant for voice communication it is widely used to exchange messages and other purposes. Functions of mobile phones vary from model to model and from one brand to another. There are basic mobile phones, feature phones, touch screen models, and smart phones.

Basic or entry level phones come with features like camera, FM radio and phonebook memory. These are perfect for first time users, and for consumers who just want to stay connected. Cellular phones could either be single SIM, dual SIM, or triple SIM. Technologies used are either CDMA or GSM. Dual SIM cellular phones could have one slot each for CDMA and GSM, or both GSM slots. There are handsets capable of carrying three SIMs, two GSM and one CDMA.

Mid range mobile phones have larger display, QWERTY keyboard and camera of at least 1.3 megapixel. Many are provided with video/audio recording and playing facility. Certain models in mid-range have direct access to social networking, e-mail and gaming websites. Touch screen is another feature of many mid-range cellular phones. Bluetooth capability allows wireless internet access and connectivity with communication devices.

High end mobile phones are feature rich and technologically advanced. Presently, handsets integrated with Android operating systems are being offered by many companies to address niche markets.
